Special Guest Lecture by Film Cameraman and Entrepreneur Callum Just – Interact Club

Hello, everyone! We are the English Debate Division of the Interact Club!

Have you ever watched *Kingsman*, *Rogue One: A Star Wars Story*, *Guardians of the Galaxy*, or *Pirates of the Caribbean*? We’re sure many of you have! We were incredibly excited to welcome Callum Just, a professional film camera technician and entrepreneur who has worked on these major film productions and traveled around the world through his career, to our school for a special guest lecture!

Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, Callum graduated from the University of London and went on to build a career as a freelance film cameraman. Alongside his work in the film industry, he also founded Digital Orchard, a company specializing in digital imaging technology for film production.

During his lecture, Callum shared fascinating stories about his childhood, what inspired him to pursue a career in filmmaking, the challenges he faced along the way, and what really happens behind the scenes of major film productions.

Although Callum now works internationally on major film projects, his journey to success was far from easy. He spoke openly about growing up with dyslexia. Coming from Scotland, where opportunities in the film industry were relatively limited, he made the decision to move to London in search of new possibilities. Starting with almost no professional connections, he gradually built his network from scratch. He took every opportunity to get involved in film production, no matter how small the job, and dedicated countless hours to developing his technical skills.

Behind what might appear to be a glamorous career, we discovered a story of perseverance, hard work, and an extraordinary commitment to his craft. Having worked with internationally renowned actors such as Johnny Depp and Tom Cruise, Callum also gave us a rare glimpse into the world of filmmaking. He explained that producing a single film requires far more than just directors, actors, and camera operators. Screenwriters, lighting technicians, makeup artists, visual effects specialists, stunt performers, set designers, accountants, and administrative staff all play essential roles. Each professional contributes their own expertise, and it is through their collaboration that a film comes to life.

And here’s a little behind-the-scenes secret! Callum mentioned that he will be involved in a long-term filming project involving a major Hollywood star. Unfortunately, we can’t reveal any more details just yet, but we’re certainly looking forward to seeing what comes next!

The lecture was organized as an open event by the English Debate Division of the Interact Club and attracted approximately 30 students. Throughout the session and even after the lecture, students enthusiastically asked questions, making the event a lively and engaging experience for everyone. One of the most memorable parts of the lecture was Callum’s advice on how to pursue our dreams.

He encouraged us to find something we genuinely love and become deeply passionate about it. While everyday life is full of distractions and temptations, he emphasized the importance of staying focused, fully committing ourselves to what matters most, and continuing to develop our abilities. According to Callum, this kind of dedication is one of the most important keys to turning our dreams into reality. Reflecting on his own experiences with dyslexia, Callum also shared another powerful message: there are many different ways to succeed in life. Rather than focusing only on what we struggle with, we should recognize our strengths, develop them, and explore the possibilities they can open up for us.

Although Callum works in the exciting and glamorous world of filmmaking, his messages were relevant far beyond the film industry. His experiences offered valuable insights into how we approach our future careers, make important decisions, and pursue our personal goals.

This special lecture was not simply an opportunity to learn about the film industry. It was also a chance for us to reflect on the importance of following our passions, embracing challenges, and making the most of our individual strengths.

Thank you so much, Callum, for sharing your incredible experiences and inspiring messages with us! We hope you will visit Sakuragaoka again the next time you come to Japan!
